Denis Wilson Reborn as Chickenman

Seafood chef Denis Wilson, the name behind Denis’ Seafood and the late Jimmy Wilson’s Seafood and Chop House, is back in business in a North Houston fast casual restaurant called Louisiana Homestyle Kitchen. Only this time, instead of seafood, he is specializing in free range chicken.

The menu is a veritable Bubba Gump litany (only with chicken instead of shrimp). Offerings include: Free range fried chicken, free range rotisserie chicken, free range chicken fricasee, free range chicken chef salad, free range chicken wedge salad, free range chicken homestyle salad, free range chicken gumbo, free range chicken tortilla soup, and a free range chicken strip poor boy.

The menu also includes fried shrimp, boiled shrimp, fried crawfish tails, red beans and rice, smothered pork chops, an awesome pot roast and a couple of poor boys.

The fried chicken that I sampled was sensational and so were the butterflied fried shrimp. Wilson’s tartar sauce alone is worth the trip. I poured the intense, chocolate-brown gravy that came with the pot roast over some rice. Wow. I can’t wait to try Wilson’s roast beef poor boy.

At this writing, the restaurant isn’t open yet. Wilson said he would be open just before Thanksgiving, so keep an eye out.

I have visited Denis’s in La. The food the is wonderful. I also consider myself a hell of a cook. I am a food network fanatic and know good food when I taste it. This food at this restaurant on Ella is terrible. I’ve made food better than everything I bought. The flounder po-boy I had was decent but just a 6in for $8.50. The free range chicken fricasee was bland and tasteless. It was served with dirty rice which was horrible. I’ve been all through southern louisiana and i know good dirty right. It had no hint of gizzard. The chicken consist of a breast with the wing and 2 sides for $10.50. I ventured to this place again to get the maque Choux which I did like. I paid $6.50 for 2 child side containers of corn which was about a scoop of corn in each container. This place will not be open long. I wouldn’t mind the prices if the food was good.

I visited this restaurant yesterday and I agree the dirty rice was horrible (old greasy taste, the cold slaw was rancid. The shrimp was decent but everything else I purchased went in the trash (rice, bisquit, cole slaw). The place was clean and very neat but the food is the worst I have ever had whether in Houston or Louisiana. Again, I do not mind the price if the food was good, its the absolute worst.

I agree with Andrew. This food is not very good. I visited last week. We ordered the fried chicken (breast and wing), a shrimp po boy, gumbo and maque choux. EVERYTHING IS UNDERSEASONED! I had to douse my fried chicken in Tabasco just so it would have some flavor. Very disappointed. It took FOREVER to get our food also. The best thing we had was the gumbo and biscuits. I will not go back.
