Got Spicy Cheese?

The Pola Cheese booth is going to be my first stop at the Urban Harvest Farmer’s Market this morning. These guys have my tastes nailed–I get the cheeses that are dusted with chile powder or pimenton (smoked paprika). Talk about a local product, they were making cheese in a house in the Montrose–although I have heard they are moving to a new and larger location near the intersection of Hillcroft and Bellaire.

The first time I sampled their cheese was at Il Sogno, the spectacular restaurant that chef Andrew Weissman runs at the Pearl Brewery in San Antonio. I was shocked when the waiter told me the cheese was made in Houston. I guess I haven’t been paying attention. At first I thought the name “Pola” sounded kind of snooty. Then I found out it was short for Port Lavaca. (The founder’s hometown?)

Stop by their Farmer’s Market booth and ask them to taste one of the spicy cheeses.
