Savoring Summer in Italy

Hot and sunny was the weather report every day I was in Italy in June 2026. I stayed in the old seaport town of Trani for several days.

Fishermen sell their catch at the Trani Harborfront every morning.

So its a pretty good bet that the fish you get in the restaurant is fresh.

Puglia’s Crudo di Mare is the Italian answer to sushi. Raw, cured, and “cooked in citrus” fish, shrimp, half shell oysters and other shellfish fresh from the Adriatic Sea, served with salad.

Fish carpaccio is a seafood spin on the shaved steak dish. At Gallo restaurant on the Trani harbor waterfront, I sampled this exquisite version with thin slices of sea bream decorated with olive oil dressing and savory condiments and served with crusty bread and cold, tart white wine.

Wow!

Ham and Melon was my appetizer at a little sidewalk cafe one afternoon–I forgot how much I love this combination–especially with fresh-sliced proscuitto and cold, ripe cantalope.
